AMD Radeon RX 9070 Boosted by XT BIOS Flash, Improving Performance by 15-20
The AMD Radeon RX 9070 Series comes with two models: a basic version and a more powerful XT version. The XT model stands out for its higher number of Compute Units (CUs), with 64 CUs compared to the 56 found in the base model.
However, some tech enthusiasts at PC Games Hardware have managed to close the performance gap by installing the BIOS from an RX 9070 XT into a regular RX 9070. This modification allows users to increase power limits and clock speeds, improving overall performance.
How the BIOS Flash Works
By flashing the BIOS from a Radeon RX 9070 XT into an AMD Radeon RX 9070, users don’t change the actual hardware configuration of the lighter RX 9070 model. However, this process allows for increased power consumption and higher clock speeds, making it easier to push the card to its limits when overclocking. In tests, performance improvements ranged from 15% to 20% in 3DMark, bringing the modified RX 9070 close to the performance of an RX 9070 XT without overclocking.
Considerations and Risks
It’s important to note that this procedure isn’t simple and requires some technical knowledge. It’s recommended to use a dual BIOS card to minimize risks in case something goes wrong. Additionally, the XT model’s design should be similar to the non-XT model to ensure compatibility, although this is generally common for custom models of the same brand.
