Earlier in the month, AMD released their first February drivers. Radeon Software Adrenalin Edition 18.2.1 offered support for the remastered Final Fantasy XII PC release. At the time, the release was just a Beta on delivered as is. Today, AMD is following up with a WHQL version of the driver. Compared to the Beta release, nothing in the patch notes has changed. However, the additional testing for WHQl should make it more stable.
Keep to their promises, AMD is delivering updates faster and more consistently. AMD has also promised to deliver at least 6-8 WHQL releases a year as well, a goal they have been keeping. Since it’s the second month of the year, a WHQL release for February is expected. Generally, however, WHQL releases do come with a different release number and at least a few fixes. What happened this time suggests that AMD was working to make 18.2.1 a WHQL release in the first place. However, they weren’t able to time it to the FF XII release date well enough, leading to a Beta release first.
With the same features as the Beta, the other features beyond FF XII are some fixes to FreeSync, Chill and Overlay. Both Need for Speed Payback and Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 3 V Generation have corruption and colour fixes. For know issues, there a few old ones as well as new ones due to Adrenalin. Both FreeSync, Overlay and Enhanced Sync have issues. There are also a number of more issues with Compute and World of Final Fantasy.
As 18.2.1 is an upgrade in every sense, there is no downside to installing it. Users on the Beta should upgrade as the new version should be more stable at the very least. Other users who have been holding off on 18.2.1 Beta can also upgrade to the official WHQL release as it should be stable. Given the early stage of the month, we can expect another release later this month, perhaps 18.2.2 if AMD doesn’t go crazy on their naming scheme.
