AMD Reveals New RX 7900 Details Basically Telling People to Not Go Early on a 4080

With Nvidia’s 4080 set for release today, there have already been a number of calls from consumers effectively asking AMD to push the release date of its RX 7900 XT and 7900 XTX graphics cards forwards in order to basically offer some stronger competition straight out of the gates. And, in this regard, they might have a point. For as amazing as the Radeon 7900 series is looking, with it not set for release for another month, many consumers may ultimately (possibly out of impatience) simply pick a 4080.

Following a report via Videocardz, however, AMD has released a whole host of new details on the 7900 series which, reading between the lines, is basically Team Red’s indirect way of saying that if a 4080 is tempting you, at least consider waiting just a little longer until their GPUs come out!

AMD Radeon RX 7900 Graphics Cards

As part of the new update, AMD has now effectively confirmed all of the remaining key specifications of the RX 7900 series which were not initially disclosed at the launch event. And looking at the manner in which they convey the information, it seems pretty clear that Team Red is doubling down on its claims that the 7900 series will be looking to take on the Nvidia 4080.

Now, in fairness, looking at the information presented, it does seem like both the 7900 XT and 7900 XTX are going to offer the Nvidia 4080 some exceptionally strong competition. Of course, those lines might get a little more blurred when factors such as ray tracing and DLSS/FSR come into the equation (which AMD has notably not really mentioned here). In terms of outright specifications though, it’s hard to deny that, at least on paper, the 7900 XT and 7900 XTX might genuinely beat the 4080 in basic grunty terms.

And more so, at a notably lower MSRP. Particularly so since we’re already seeing retailers confirming 4080 prices at around the £1,400-$1,600 mark!

AMD is also keen to highlight that their 7900 series is going to be notably smaller than the Nvidia 4080. Additionally, they once again draw attention to their graphics cards not featuring the 12VHPWR adaptor which has been bringing Nvidia more than a little controversy over the last month.

And in terms of factors which are incontrovertible, AMD has once again drilled home the point that their 7900 series will offer DisplayPort 2.1 compatibility. Something which neither the Nvidia 4080 nor 4090 will have. And based on their showcase presentation, this could be a huge deciding factor for competitive gamers looking at their next GPU.

While AMD has still yet to confirm any comparative benchmarks to the 4080 (which, in fairness, isn’t notably unusual given that the 4080 is only releasing today), they are willing to hammer home the point that this is going to represent a huge generation-on-generation leap in terms of gaming performance when compared to the best their 6000 series had to offer.

What Do We Think?

Yep, make no bones about it, AMD is asking consumers to wait for their 7900 series before taking the plunge on a potentially regretable 4080 purchase. And, in truth, I don’t think I can argue with that premise. Both the 7900 XT and 7900 XTX are looking fantastic while, at least in theory, offering comparative performance to the 4080 while undercutting its MSRP quite notably!

The key detail, however, will of course be seen when we do finally get some comparative benchmarks. For the moment though, as tempting as the 4080 might be (12VHPWR issues to one side), I’m going to be waiting for the Radeon 7900 series and I think you should too!
