AMD Reveals RX 7700 XT and 7800 XT Graphics Cards

AMD has today presented the new Radeon RX 7000 series graphics cards at their AMD Highlight show at Gamescom.

Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT Revealed

Scott Herkelman from AMD’s Radeon team took the stage at Gamescom today to present the new Radeon RX 7800 XT 16GB and 7700 XT 12GB graphics cards. Both of these cards feature a dual fan design with DP 2.1 and AV1 encoding. With these GPUs, AMD is targeting the 1440p resolution which is widely regarded as the optimal resolution for modern gaming.

Performance

AMD presented us with benchmarks from 5 games at their targetted 1440p resolution at max settings. The Last of Us Part 1, Resident Evil 4 (RT), Star Wars: Jedi Survivor, Hogwarts Legacy and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. All five of these games sat above 60 FPS showing an optimal experience for most games with room for lowered settings in the competitive Call of Duty.

7700 XT VS RTX 4060 Ti

The RX 7700 XT 12GB card was compared against the 16GB variant of the 4060 Ti which also means the 8GB variant since they’re identical. In these tests, we can see the RX 7700 XT comes on top with most titles including up to 31% on Modern Warfare 2, 26% on CyberPunk 2077 and the only outliers being F1 23 and Doom Eternal which saw losses of -6% and -9%. Of course, all of these benchmarks are from AMD and we will have to wait for third-party reviews for a real perspective.

RX 7800 XT VS 4070

The RX 7800 XT was compared against the RTX 4070 with up to 23% gains in both Cyberpunk 2077 and Modern Warfare 2. The card again does lose out in Doom Eternal and F1 23 but also Spider-Man Miles Morales, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Dying Light 2 all of which had Ray-Tracing on. Without Ray Tracing it’s possible the 7800 XT could come out on top.

Pricing

Coming to pricing now which is the big make or break for these graphics cards and a very touchy subject at the moment. The RX 7800 XT will be starting from $499 which will most definitely be a better choice than the $499 4060 Ti 16GB and the $599 MSRP RTX 4070 which AMD’s benchmarks show many gains over. The RX 7700 XT on the other hand comes in at $50 cheaper at $449, again showing a better choice over the RTX 16GB 4060 Ti, though that was never really a choice to begin with.

Both of these cards will be available on September 6th.
