With just about 10 days to go till AMD launches the RX 480, leaks have started popping up for the card. First, we had benchmarks and later pictures of some AIB partner cards. Now, we’re getting leaks with more details and pictures. We now have our first leak of what the RX 480 reference model will look like and a good look at the new Polaris 10 die.
From the leaked image, we can see that Polaris 10 which powers the RX 480 is relatively small. Based on our rough calculations in reference to the PCIe connector, we’re estimating something the area of ~200mm2. This is actually in the area of the R9 270X in terms of die size and would suggest a transistor count just above the R9 380X which makes sense given the 2304 shaders. The reference cooler itself is also small, just covering the central part of the graphics card and leaving the area between the GPU and bracket unused.
This makes a lot of sense based on the leak that the card only draws about 110W during normal usage. This is about the same as the R7 370 and should give decent overclocking results given the extra 40W of power available from the 6pin PCIe power connector. Finally, the leaker suggests that overclocks of 1400mhz should be pretty normal given what he has seen. With all of this hype, I can’t wait to see how it will all play out once June 29th rolls around.
