AMD will formally confirm the launch of its new Ryzen 7000 processors on August 29th with a subsequent release date being rumoured for September 27th. – In other words, while samples will currently be out there in the wild, they shouldn’t be in the hands of the general public just yet. – Following a report via Videocardz, however, it seems that someone in China doesn’t seem to care much about that as they’re attempting to sell what is purported to be an AMD Ryzen 5 7600X on the black market.
The sample does look fairly legitimate in that it conforms with prior leaks surrounding not just other Ryzen 7000 processors, but specifically, the overall shape and design of the new LGA AM5 socket. – Put simply, we’re pretty sure that this is a legitimate Ryzen 7600X engineering sample that someone is trying to sell.
In this regard, however, there are clearly more than a few flags. Firstly, the fact that the seller is clearly breaking rules with AMD by attempting to privately sell this ahead of release. Secondly, the fact that this engineering sample is being sold by itself. In other words, you can have the CPU, but getting an AM5 motherboard to run it on is the purchaser’s problem. Thirdly, it’s an engineering sample that, typically speaking, may mean that it will not confirm to the final retail version.
And fourthly?… Well, how about a completely ludicrous price tag just to cap this all off?
Doing a rough bit of maths and exchange rate calculations, with this AMD Ryzen 5 7600X listed for Y9999 (Yuan), this means that the current owner wants just under $1,500 for this engineering sample. A CPU which, incidentally, when it is officially released in a little over a month’s time, should have an MSRP of no greater than around $300!
Put simply, while certainly interesting, it would require an act of complete madness to actually purchase this CPU right now. And just in case you needed a fifth red flag to add to those we listed above, how about the fact that this might be fake, and, by proxy, a scam?…
