AMD Ryzen 7 1800X – The New High-Performance King!

AMD launched their flagship Ryzen 7 1800X processor just a few months ago. Since then, it has gone on to impress with its high-end multi-threaded performance. Just like the R7 1700, or any other Ryzen chip, the new CPU’s are some of the most disruptive product launches in recent years. Not only have the new chips been able to deliver fantastic performance, but they’ve also been able to do it at a much more competitive price point than what Intel has to offer.

Welcome to the World of Ryzen

Lisa Su introduced the world to the power of Ryzen 7 back in February. As you may already know, the 1800X was the flagship of the Ryzen 7 series, offering the fastest out-of-the-box clock speeds for enthusiast gaming and workstation systems.

“Innovation and competition return to high-performance PCs March 2nd with worldwide Ryzen™ 7 availability. The AMD Ryzen 7 lineup includes the world’s highest performing and lowest powered 8-core PC processors. Immediate pre-order availability from more than 180 retailers and boutique OEMs.” – AMD

AM4 Platform Brings New Features to AMD Systems

The Ryzen 1800X, as well as all other Ryzen CPUs, use the new Zen Core Architecture. This design introduced new features such as AMD SenseMI and Extended Frequency Range (XFR). With this, the 1800X can measure its temperatures and loads accurately. When your applications demand more performance, and the thermal headroom is available, the chip will overclock its self automatically for optimal performance.

  • 8 Core with 16 Threads
  • 4.00GHz clock speed
  • 14nm FinFet Process
  • 16MB L3 Cache
  • Dual Channel DDR4 Controller

Of course, all Ryzen CPUs are unlocked. With the use of a B350 or X370 motherboards, you can push the limits of what Ryzen is capable of. In our review of the 1800X, we got the CPU to an impressive 4.1 GHz, allowing it to compete with the performance of high-end Intel CPUs; such as the Intel i7-5960X and i7-7700K.

The Balance of Power Has Shifted!

When it comes to high-performance multitasking and gaming, the Ryzen 1800X is king. While Ryzen seems to fall behind a little at 1080P, it can pull ahead at higher resolutions; particularly for 4K gaming. Even more so, with the use of its 8-core and 16-thread design, it is cable of gaming at high-resolution and high frame rates, while still having power leftover for game streaming. For content creators who stream their games on services like Twitch. Or YouTube content creators who render a lot of videos, it’s easy to see why this CPU would be appealing.

Ryzen is now Better Than Ever!

The 1800X is now well proven in the market since launch. We reviewed it at launch, and it was certainly impressive then. It wasn’t perfect at launch, but few things are. However, since then, we’ve seen memory support improve, significant performance optimisations and much more that have matured the platform faster than we expected. When paired with one of the fastest graphics cards on the market, we discovered that Ryzen was a prime choice for those gaming at high resolutions or on ultrawide monitors.

Should I Invest in the Fastest Ryzen 7 CPU?

The 1800X is pretty expensive, at least in the sense that it’s the most expensive Ryzen CPU on the market right now. Most high-end gaming rigs, even those gaming at 4K could get away with the R7 1700. However, those who see time as money when it comes to their workloads, investing in the best is the only option. If you want a system that blasts through rendering tasks, can multitask extreme workloads for video game development, or any content creation; the Ryzen 1800X has a lot to offer to you. Of course, it’ll still be a beast when it comes to playing your favourite games too!

R7 1800X Price and Availability

When the Ryzen 1800X hit the market a few months ago, its retail price was just short of £500/$500. However, since then, we’ve seen the market prices get even more competitive. You can now pick up a Ryzen 7 1800X 8-Core CPU for just £428.99. Not only that, but there’s not a much wider range of motherboards on the market, a growing number of AM4 ready coolers and more memory kits than ever support the new CPUs for maximum performance.
