Moving from 14nm to 12nm offers some power savings for the new Ryzen CPUs at relative speeds. However, with higher clock speeds, their net use is higher than the last generation. However, the 2700X used barely much more than an 1800X, and still uses less than the Intel 8700K in CPU bound tasks. Overall, I think AMD has made significant progress here, gaining a lot more performance for only a small power increase.

Temperatures are pretty tight too, actually running a little cooler than the last generation at stock, but managing to keep control once overclocked too really. However, keep a big cooler on there to hit the top clock speeds with XFR, as if those temperatures creep up, XFR just won’t be able to do its job, and you could be losing performance. Of course, this is true for any CPU to some extent.
