How Much Does it Cost?
The new AMD Ryzen 5, Ryzen 7 and the Ryzen 9 CPUs all launched this week. There are four versions available and as you can see, with the 5800X costing just over £400, but still giving Intel a hard run for their money vs the 10900K, and the incredible 5950X, while expensive, may pay you back in time when it comes to rendering and computational workloads, even if it does seem expensive upfront.

Overview
I must admit that both of these CPUs are amazing in their own respects, but they are VERY different beasts. Let’s start with the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, which is turning out to be a bit of an all-round hero for both content creation and high-end gaming performance. Albeit, if you’ve followed the 1800X, 2800X, 3800X and the XT variants, you’ll know that’s always been the case. While they always beat Intel in the multi-core stuff like CineBench, they always came in behind Intel when it got to the gaming performance. That’s really not the case any more, with the 10900K finding its self in close company throughout and even being beaten in some graphics tests. That and AMD now has a firm lead for single-core performance too.

I was really impressed with the Ryzen 9 5900X this week, it’s a real powerhouse for productivity and rendering tasks, while still being a solid gaming chip. However, the Ryzen 9 5950X is in a league of its own when it comes to heavy workloads. I’ll admit, if you’re a gamer, it’s not really the right chip. However, if you’re editing a lot of videos, doing game development, content creation, etc, it’s truly an exceptional CPU. This level of performance in an AM4 package is remarkable. It set a LOT of new records for our Compression & Rendering results, and the ones it didn’t win were extremely close!
Should I Buy One?
Are you exctied by things like 4K gaming and/or high refresh rates, streaming on Twitch, making fun YouTube videos, and excessive multi-tasking? Then the Ryzen 7 5800X is going to tick all the right boxes for you. It’s one of the strongest all-round CPU products I’ve ever seen!
If your day consists of looking at software saying “compiling”, “rendering” or “processing” then the 5950X is what you want. For content creation, it’s the fastest consumer chip for the job right now and a solid investment to speed up your workflow.
