AMD has been busy improving performance on Ryzen ever since its release. Sometimes its is big as the AGESA update which significantly improves DDR4 performance. Sometimes, they work with developers to do game-specific optimizations, which is evident in the latest Rise of the Tomb Raider update.
Beginning with version 770.1 of the latest Tomb Raider game, AMD Ryzen users can expect a performance boost of up to 28%. Those who get 123.4 frames-per-second in 1080p medium preset can expect the new average framerate to reach 160.2 after the update. Even users who use the high setting can get a substantial boost, jumping from 120.4 fps to 151.4 fps.
AMD conducted the test using an AMD Ryzen 7 1800X processor with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card. This is done to ensure that the update is GPU agnostic and the improvements are simply from the CPU. Users can easily check the performance for themselves by rolling back to the previous version after the update. This option is under the Beta drop down menu on Steam.
According to developer Crystal Dynamics, the update tunes the size of the rendering tasks across different threads. This update allows multicore CPUs to contribute and combining some others to reduce overheads in the scheduler. Crystal Dynamics also states that the update also reduces GPU driver overhead, even with NVIDIA GPUs.
