AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X Will Have 16 Cores

At Computex, AMD official took the wraps off their new Threadripper CPUs. Using the same Ryzen brand and Zen recapture, Threadripper is AMD’s gift to the high-end desktop market. Before the dust has even had a chance to settle from Computex and E3, more leaks have emerged for the new platform. Based off of this new leak, we now know what one of AMD’s 16 core chips is called.
Because Computex was just a basic reveal, AMD did not release many details. The big takeaway was that the lineup would feature up to 16 cores. From the Primatelabs database Geekbench 4 listing, we know that one of the 16 core chips is the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X. We also know that this 16 cores 32 thread chip will have a 3.4 GHz clock speed, either base or boost. Lastly, the chip features 32MB of L3 cache, 64 PCIe lanes and quad channel DDR4.
As we’ve seen time and again, large chips tend to feature lower clocks. This is simply due to the difficulties in getting enough cores to pass muster as well as heat concerns. If the 3.4 GHz number is the base speed, the 1950X may very well be the flagship. We also don’t know how many 16 core chips are coming out, but there should at least be 2 on past lineups. In addition tot he 1950X, we also have the 12 core Threadripper 1920 we know about as well.
With test samples out in the wild, it is only a matter of time until AMD launches Threadripper. Various reports have pointed to late July or early August for a potential launch. Either way, HEDT fans will be spoiled with both Intel’s Skylake-X and AMD’s Threadripper coming out this summer.
