The latest Threadripper CPU is absolutely savage when it comes to throwing out big numbers. When it comes to 3D performance it scored our second highest score to date, sitting just behind the Intel i9-7980XE. However, keep in mind that the Intel i9-7980XE is twice the price of the Threadripper CPU. It’s also ahead of the older 1950X TR4 CPU, meaning it now beats the i9-7900X, which is priced similarly to the new Threadripper. In Unigine, it didn’t favour as well, but it still posted a competitive score there. PCMark did well, although that test still favours higher clock speeds vs the number of cores; the score was higher than the 1950X, so not too bad overall.
It’s when we get into the big number crunching CPU bound tasks that Threadripper shows its true value. For WPrime is scored out fastest ever time, beating out the i9-7980XE by a small margin; again, no small feat for a CPU that’s half of its price. It set our second highest score for Cinebench Multi-Core performance too, beating the old Threadripper and blasting way past the i9-7900X, but sitting just behind the i9-7980XE. Then again in Handbrake, it scored our highest to date by a huge margin, transcoding 4K at a whopping 84 FPS.
