AMD Threadripper May Arrive Early August

With their new Zen architecture, AMD is making a remarkable comeback in the CPU market. Earlier this year, AMD already launched their mainstream Ryzen CPUs. During Computex, AMD announced their new high-end desktop offering, Threadripper. So far, AMD has only confirmed that the new CPUs will arrive in the summer. An earlier report suggested that the launch would take place on July 27th. According to this latest report, August 10th may be the real launch date.

The previous report came from Dell which revealed their Area 51 Threadripper Special Edition. That system would become available for pre-order on July 27th. However, this latest report suggests August 10th is the real launch date. However, both of these dates can be reconciled. AMD could “launch” Threadripper on July 27th with specifications and pricing information. However, it won’t be until August 10th, exactly 2 weeks later, that chips become available. A soft paper launch followed by the hard launch isn’t unprecedented, especially when it comes to AMD.

As we know already, AMD is releasing several Threadripper CPUs, with up to 16 cores. This means there is also a possibility of some chips coming on July 27th and others on August 10th. Along with Threadripper, there is also the new X399 platform. X399 will offer up to 64 PCIe lanes and use the new Socket TR4 with4094 pins and quad channel DDR4. With Intel releasing part of their new Skylake-X lineup in the summer as well, HEDT users will have plenty of choice come August.
