AMD to Launch Threadripper 5000 in August?

Given that it’s been around 20 months now since AMD released their latest 3000 series Threadripper processors, I think many HEDT consumers would agree that the time is right for something new to come to the market. Officially speaking, AMD has remained somewhat tight-lipped on the subject. Following a report via TechPowerUp, however, fresh information suggests that Threadripper 5000 is definitely on the way, and more so, it could make its debut this August!

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 5000

Like what happened with the latest Ryzen 5000 CPUs, AMD is expected to completely bypass the 4000-series naming for Threadripper in favour of keeping a more uniform approach to their products. Given that the Threadripper 5000 series is expected to transition to the Zen 3 architecture, however (a platform that certainly took their standard processors a big step forward), these have all the potential to be very exciting indeed!

What Can We Expect?

In terms of performance and specifications, so far, we’ve heard very little concrete either way. Some rumours have pointed towards some flagship 128-core monster (something clearly bordering on the obscene), while others suggest that AMD will retain at least one 16-core design to appeal to the more budget-focused workstation/HEDT user. It is, however, understood that with a BIOS update, TRX40 motherboards will still be fully compatible with the latest processors. So, the TR4 socket will still be retained, but we wouldn’t be surprised if we see some updated models brought to the market for an extra bit of spice.

Do we think the Threadripper 5000 series will launch this August though? Well, putting this rumour to one side, the timing does sound about right and, rest assured, we’re more than a little excited to see what AMD has cooked up for us (metaphorically speaking).
