AMD to Launch Three Versions of Ryzen Z2 Processor for Portable Consoles

Portable gaming consoles have been on the rise, with many manufacturers following in the footsteps of the Nintendo Switch. Devices like the Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally, and Lenovo Legion GO are leading the charge in bringing PC gaming experiences on the go.

Following the release of these popular devices, AMD is gearing up to launch the second generation of its Ryzen Z2 processors for portable consoles. As reported by sources, AMD is preparing to release not just one, but three different versions of the Ryzen Z2.

Three Versions of the Ryzen Z2

AMD has confirmed three models of the Ryzen Z2 processor lineup:

  • Ryzen Z2E: The most powerful option, boasting 12 GPU cores based on the RDNA 3.5 architecture with Zen 5 and Zen 5C cores.
  • Ryzen Z2: A close follow-up, featuring 12 GPU cores and Zen 4 CPU cores. It offers a performance level similar to the Z1 Extreme processor currently available.
  • Ryzen Z2G: An entry-level model with 12 RDNA 2 GPU cores. This version, based on Zen 3+ architecture, aims to bring down the cost of portable consoles, making gaming more accessible to a wider audience.

The new Ryzen Z2 processors are expected to have the same TDP range as the first generation, running between 9W and 30W. According to industry experts, this consistency is a key factor in keeping the devices efficient without sacrificing performance.

As for the release date, AMD has not yet provided a detailed roadmap. However, it’s expected that these processors will be available in the first or second quarter of 2025, likely alongside new portable consoles from ASUS or Lenovo.
