AMD is preparing to increase the thermal design power (TDP) for its Ryzen 5 9600X and Ryzen 7 9700X processors from 65W to 105W. This change will come with the release of the AGESA 1.2.0.1 Patch A BIOS update, expected to be available for all AM5 motherboards.
The update is significant because it addresses performance concerns that have arisen since the launch of these Zen 5-based CPUs. Initially, AMD considered increasing the TDP of the Ryzen 7 9700X to 120W but ultimately decided to cap it at 105W. This adjustment aims to strike a balance between enhanced performance and manageable thermal output, a key factor for users prioritizing both power and efficiency.
The initial launch of the Ryzen 5 9600X and Ryzen 7 9700X saw a drop in TDP compared to their predecessors, which led to performance criticisms. With the new 105W TDP mode, AMD hopes to provide a boost in performance while still offering users the option to operate in the original 65W TDP mode for those who prioritize lower power consumption.
The news is still considered a rumor, as AMD has not officially confirmed the TDP changes. However, the upcoming reviews of the Ryzen 9 9900X and 9950X may shed more light on these developments.
