More details have emerged from AMD’s secret Vega Tech Summit last week: first, we got a glimpse of a Vega GPU running DOOM at 4K/60fps, and now we’ve gotten our first look at a curious cube-shaped GPU solution which packs in four Vega processors and boasts 100 TFLOPS.
The Vega Cube, as it is currently known, combines four subunit boards to contain a Vega GPU each, with two open sides acting as the air channel – presumably, that space would be filled with either a heatsink, liquid cooling, a fan, or a combination of the three – and is around the size of a large mug.
The news comes courtesy of Andreas Schilling of German tech site hardwareluxx.de. Schilling reports that the Vega Cube could be AMD’s answer to NVIDIA’s Tesla P100, and as such could form part of its Radeon Instinct deep learning range.
“In addition to the Radeon Instinct MI25, AMD unveiled a small cube which uses the Vega hardware at the Tech Summit,” Schilling writes. “The cube is expected to be a demo platform for deep learning, rather than as desktop hardware.”
Since the Vega Cube was merely teased at the Tech Summit – no official name, purpose, or release was revealed – it could just be a cool proof-of-concept demonstration of the power of its Vega GPU.
