AMD Unveils Z2 Extreme Chipset for 2025

At the IFA 2024 event in Berlin, AMD confirmed the highly anticipated Z2 Extreme chip, the successor to the popular Ryzen Z1 Extreme. This new processor is set to revolutionize handheld gaming devices by drastically improving battery life while maintaining high performance. According to AMD, devices powered by the Z2 Extreme chip will see battery life extended from the current 45 minutes to over 3 hours during high-performance gaming sessions.

Game-Changing Performance and Efficiency

The Z1 Extreme processor, found in popular handhelds like the Lenovo Legion Go and ASUS ROG Ally, has already delivered impressive console-level performance in portable form factors. However, battery life limitations have been a recurring issue. Jack Huynh, AMD’s Senior Vice President, emphasized that the Z2 Extreme chip, based on the Strix Point architecture, is specifically designed to address this challenge.

In a closed-door presentation, Huynh stated, “We are aiming for high-performance gaming on handheld devices to last much longer. A leap from 45 minutes to over 3 hours is just the beginning.” The Z2 Extreme will feature AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames technology and AI-driven performance enhancements to balance power efficiency and gameplay quality.

While AMD has yet to release specific benchmarks, we may see more details about the chip during CES 2025.
