During the recent Vega Next Generation Architecture Preview event, AMD revealed a whole host of new information on their new GPU designs. At the same time, no concrete launch date was given other than the fact that it would happen sometime in Q1 of 2017. According to a new leak coming out today, it appears that Vega will be arriving in the second half of Q1 sometime in May this year.
As we know from AMD’s various presentations and a variety of leaks, the first Vega variant we are getting is Vega 10. This should be a GPU featuring 4096 shaders in 64 Next-Gen Compute Units clocked around 1,500 MHz or higher. The VRAM will be HBM2 of course, offering 8x the density and 2x the speed compared to HBM. While previous leaks have suggested that Vega 10 will arrive with 16GB of HBM2, the new source suggests that the initial Vega 10 variant will feature only 8 GB. Its possible we will be getting both a full chip with 16GB as well as a cut down variant with 8GB.
Unfortunately for us, the source has not pinpointed an exact launch date for May. One possibility is for a Computex launch which starts on May 30th. While AMD has used major events as launch venues, they’ve also chosen to stand out a bit by launching slightly before. Either way, it looks like Nvidia will get an early shot in with GTX 1080 Ti at GDC in March.
