AMD Working With JEDEC To Develop DDR5 With Speeds Up To 17,600 MT/s

AMD and JEDEC are working together to produce a new standard for DDR5 that could see speeds of up to 17,600 MT/s.

AMD and JEDEC Working Together

DDR5 is fast but they can get a lot faster thanks to JEDEC who are aiming to double current speeds through the use of multi-ranked buffered DIMMS (MRDIMMs). JEDEC announced this technology, as well as their roadmap at MemCon 2023 and AMD, has expressed their interest in working with JEDEC to drive this new standard of memory. Robert Hormuth from AMD shared some photos from the presentation.

What are MRDIMMs

To put the technology as simply as I can, MRDIMMs are multi-ranked buffered DIMMs which effectively combine two DDR5 DIMMs onto a single module which effectively doubles the bandwidth. With this technology, JEDEC expects to be able to achieve 17,600 MT/s by the 2030s with their gen 3 MRDIMMs. Intel has already got a similar solution called Multiplexer Combined Ranks DIMM (MCRDIM) which makes use of a similar approach and is expected to be seen in 2024/2025 with their Granite Rapids CPUs.
