The overwhelming majority of hardware enthusiasts invest in third-party CPU coolers with superb thermal dissipation and a wonderful noise to performance ratio. This includes large air coolers like the Noctua NH-D15s, Asetek closed-loop-coolers and even custom water loops which create a spectacular finish. Despite this, the average consumer doesn’t overclock their processor or really have aesthetic concerns because they’re using a chassis without a side-panel window. As a result, they tend to rely on the CPU’s stock cooler which remains functional during normal usage scenarios. Of course, both AMD and Intel have employed fairly basic heatsinks to reduce costs and maintain a compact form factor when shipping the CPU. This makes business sense because a vastly improved CPU cooler would result in increased prices, or so you would think.
During CES 2016, AMD demoed their new Wraith CPU cooler and I instantly noticed how quiet it was compared to the previous design. According to AMD, the Wraith delivers 34 percent more airflow and 24 percent more surface area for heat dissipation than its predecessor. This is a monumental improvement and I couldn’t wait to request a review sample to test these bold claims. Currently, the Wraith cooler is bundled with the A10-7890K, FX-6350, FX-8350 and FX8370 in a special package at no additional cost. The question remains, is this is the best stock cooler ever made?
Packaging and Accessories
AMD’s revised CPU packaging looks absolutely stunning and I’m really fond of the striking contrast between the black and orange colours. Furthermore, the imposing image of the Wraith cooler emphasises the cooling prowess you can enjoy in such a compact box.
On the side, there’s a brief description of the CPU’s suitability as part of a powerful gaming PC. The back portion doesn’t contain anything of interest so I’ve disregarded that particular element of the box design.
The CPU is contained in a minuscule box and kept away from the Wraith cooler. AMD’s presentation is sublime which results in a fantastic user-experience when opening the product for the very first time. Honestly, I cannot fault the packing here as it enthuses such a premium feel and is executed superbly.
