AMD is celebrating the one year anniversary of their Ryzen launch. The new line of course, brought excitement back to the desktop CPU market and allowed AMD to compete in the space once again. For the following 12 months after its release, AMD has taken advantage of their initial success and kept the momentum going. They have done this by having a monthly Ryzen product launch up until now. Here are some of the highlights from the last year:
AMD however is not resting in their laurels, but pushing even further in 2018. The much anticipated 2nd generation Ryzen is almost out, on schedule for an April launch. This new processor is going to be based on a 12nm Zen+ architecture. The best part is that this CPU is compatible with existing AM4 mainboards. That means unlike Intel users who had to upgrade to a Z370 chipset board for Coffee Lake CPUs, Ryzen users can simply plop down a new Zen+ CPU. It just simply requires a BIOS update.
There will be a new X470 chipset coming which is optimized for these new Ryzen processors. According to AMD, this introduces lower power support and several more optimizations. However, the company did not reveal further details.
Furthermore, AMD plans to finally release the Ryzen PRO mobile, a high-performance processor for notebooks after the 2nd Gen Ryzen release. This means AMD will finally be able to compete with premium commercial notebook offerings of their own. So far they have only disclosed a Q2 2018 release, with no specifics.
AMD is also announcing that the 2nd generation Ryzen Threadripper will arrive after that, within the 2H 2018 timeframe. However, there is no confirmation yet if this is going to be re-using the same TR4 socket as the 1st generation Threadripper. Although, the answer is most likely yes.
