The Athlon 3000G is a pretty weak CPU in 2023 with only two cores but its low price makes it a good option for something lightweight with integrated graphics, specifically the Radeon Vega 3 Graphics. I have one of these in my dodgy eBay GPU test bench just for the cheap iGPU since my old Ryzen 5 2600 doesn’t have any. Moving on from that, the plucky little chip has received a bit of a makeover and a “new” cooler.
The new packaging for the Athlon 3000G was shared by Hoang Anh Phu on Twitter/X (Via TomsHardware) and shows off a more modern packaging design which appears to reflect the different versions of the chip. There are two versions of the Athlon 3000G both with the same specifications though a newer model uses the “Dali” die which is compatible with Windows 11, unlike the other version.
The new packaging retains the white colour of the older packaging but utilises a larger image of AMD’s logo with the Athlon name taking a smaller position on the box. The large RADEON VEGA GRAPHICS logo has also been removed. Additionally, the Wraith Stealth cooler is seen on the box and looks to be now included with this CPU as opposed to the smaller stock cooler bundled with the original.
Clearly, if AMD is spending the time to redesign the box for this old and low-powered chip, it must still be selling well, especially at its $49 MSRP which it appears to have retained. In the UK the chip seems hard to come by, theres a used listing on Amazon, but I can’t see it elsewhere other than on sites such as eBay.
