According to rumours circulating at the moment AMD is set to release the next installment of its 28nm graphics card series known as Southern Islands. AMD will deliver the HD 7870 and HD 7850 video cards some time around March, most likely the first half. Nvidia is then expected to respond in April with the launch of the 28nm Kepler graphics card series under the GTX 600 series naming.
In exciting news for AMD fans there is an expected launch of the HD 7990 in the second half of March to round up AMD’s 28nm launch and the first wave of GCN graphics cards. This should take the crown of fastest graphics card on the planet away from the GTX 590 and restore it back to AMD’s possession.
“NVIDIA is expect to respond to HD 7000 with three new Kepler chips – GK110, GK104 and GK106 over eight different SKUs including GTX 690, GTX 660 and GTX 640. Surprisingly, Digitimes reports that NVIDIA is releasing all eight models in April – an unprecedented and unlikely release schedule for the GPU industry. However, we should certainly see the first Kepler GPUs around April, most likely GK104. According to latest rumours, GK104 is expected to be radically different from its predecessors and NVIDIA’s biggest architectural change since G80 in 2006.”
