New Ryzen 7 9800X3D Takes on Intel Core Ultra 9 285K, Promises 20% Performance Boost

AMD has finally lifted the curtain on the highly-anticipated Ryzen 7 9800X3D, putting an end to weeks of speculation and leaks. Featuring AMD’s Zen 5 architecture and an impressive 3D cache of 104MB, this powerhouse processor is here to challenge Intel’s Core Ultra 9 285K, claiming a 20% performance increase.

New Design with Zen 5 and 3D Cache

The Ryzen 7 9800X3D comes packed with eight cores and 16 threads, fueled by AMD’s renowned Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT) technology. Base clock speeds are set at a respectable 4.7 GHz, with a boost clock pushing up to 5.2 GHz — and this time, no trade-offs on speed. AMD’s new chip packs a punch without the reduction in operating speeds seen in previous X3D models.

The processor’s 120W Thermal Design Power (TDP) places it among high-performance CPUs while still aiming to maintain efficiency. AMD touts this chip as the ultimate choice for gamers, eyeing the top spot from the Ryzen 7 7800X3D after the Ryzen 9000 fell short. This time around, AMD’s second-generation 3D V-Cache technology introduces 64MB of cache stacked under the processor, enhancing thermal transfer and delivering that extra edge in performance.

Unlocked Overclocking Capabilities

Unlike previous X3D models, AMD has unlocked overclocking with this new release. The unlocked multiplier gives users greater flexibility and control, something that gaming enthusiasts and performance-focused consumers will surely appreciate.

This processor achieves up to 8% more average FPS in games, with notable improvements in titles like Star Wars Outlaws, which even exceeds double figures. AMD also claims that The Last of Us: Part 1 sees a substantial jump, with minimum FPS at the 1% mark improving by up to 31%.

Overall, AMD has set ambitious goals with this release, targeting an overall performance edge of 20% more than the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K.

Availability and Pricing

The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D will officially launch on November 7, 2024, with a starting price of $479.
