Angry DC Fans Want Rotten Tomatoes Shut Down

DC Comics fans are petitioning for movie review site Rotten Tomatoes to be closed down, furious at the scathing reviews doled out to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad.
The Change.org petition, entitled Shutdown Rotten Tomatoes, reads (verbatim):
We need this site to be shut down because It’s Critics always give The DC Extended Universe movies unjust Bad Reviews, Like
1- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 2016
2- Suicide Squad 2016
and that Affects people’s opinion even if it’s a really great movies
While the great irony here is that Warner Bros., the studio that produced Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, has owned Rotten Tomatoes since 2011, the premise of this petition operates on three key misunderstandings:
- That Rotten Tomatoes reviews films: Rotten Tomatoes is a review aggregator, much like Metacritic, that collects reviews from numerous sources and uses them to form an average score;
- That film reviews can be measured objectively: assessing art is subjective. Because one opinion does not tally with another does not make either untrue. Taste is variable. No art is universal. So Vanity Fair thinks Suicide Squad is a turd? Who cares? If you watch it and enjoy it, that’s all that matters. If your enjoyment of art is impeded by the contradictory opinion of other people, you need to work on your self-esteem;
- That such an idiotic petition would be taken seriously: Who is being petitioned here? The President of the Internet?
Over 500 people, though, seem to disagree with my opinion. Maybe I’ll start a petition to get those people banned from the internet.
