Antec EarthWatts Platinum 550W Power Supply Review

A Closer Look – Exterior

The top is plain matte black with a 120mm fan that has hexagonal mesh.

The bottom is also matte black and is entirely plain. The unit measures in at 150 by 86 by 140mm (W x H x D).

The side of the power supply has the label with all the power details on it.

The other side is mostly plain with a raised Antec logo breaking the monotony.

Being a non modular power supply the cable end has no modular connectors just a single clump of hard-wired cables.

The rear has hexagonal mesh, a kettle lead input and a power switch.

The unit is non-modular meaning everything is hard wired. The quality of the sleeving is pretty poor in my opinion and it isn’t the most attractive either.

You get the following connectors with this power supply:

  • 1 x 24 pin motherboard connector
  • 1 x 8 pin (4+4) CPU connector
  • 2 x 6+2 pin PCIe connectors
  • 4 x Molex 4 pin peripheral connectors
  • 5 x SATA peripheral connectors
  • 1 x FDD peripheral connector

The connectors available to this unit are reasonably well thought out for its wattage. You’re unlikely to be using more than a single graphics card for a unit for this wattage although you theoretically could. If Antec provided four PCIe 6+2 pin connectors it might be useful for someone looking to run two moderate cards like two GTX 760s or two R9 270Xs. Two R9 270s would be possible as they only use a single 6 pin. Though the short distance between the PCIe 6+2 pin connectors would make that difficult.
