Antec High Current Gamer Extreme X850 Power Supply Review

Final Thoughts

Pricing

The Antec High Current Gamer Extreme X850 currently retails for a price in the region of £120. In terms of similar gold-rated power supplies, this sits pretty much in the middle of the pack. On the surface, you can’t necessarily call this a bargain, but when you scratch the surface, you learn that you’re getting an exceptionally strong power supply here for your money.

Don’t forget as well, unlike many other similarly priced power supplies, this comes with a huge 10-year guarantee. That, in itself, makes this a great investment that can easily last not only for your current build, but for many systems to come!

Overview

Aesthetically, I really like the Antec HCG Extreme X850. It has managed to do what very few other power supplies can. Namely, look both professional, but also very stylistically pretty. I honestly love the design of this power supply and this strong ethos continues when you get inside to look at the components.

Antec clearly put a lot of effort into this power supply and it clearly shows!

Efficiency and Beyond

As a gold-rated power supply, our testing results showed that this power supply was practically bullet-proof. Yes, the results at 20% load were a little wobbly for the PFC and efficiency, but not to any degree of concern. Beyond that, however, the Antec X850 performed well beyond the expected remit of your average power supply.

It isn’t perfect, but at the same time, there’s very little to criticise.

Should I Buy One?

If there’s one thing that’s frustrating in the PC building community, it’s seeing someone put together a decent system build, but then go cheap on the power supply. Despite its rather mundane function, a strong power supply is not only an investment it’s a nailed-on guarantee that it will likely never give you any problems!

For £120, this might seem like quite a hefty outlay for a power supply. The Antec HCG Extreme X850, however, is no ordinary power supply. It’s strong aesthetics and excellent testing performance shows that a clear effort has been made by Antec to produce a truly great power supply.

While we suspect that this will not be the last we see of the ‘High Current Gamer’ brand, if it was, it’s an excellent product to end on!
