Fan Speed

Featuring a 135mm cooling solution, the fan provided with the Antec Signature is certainly larger than the standard 120mm you see in most other PSU models. While this should, by mere proxy of size, produce some nice cooling performance, we encountered something of a problem in regards to our testing.

Namely, that after running our tests for nearly an hour, the fan never once deemed it necessary to operate. Now, you might be wondering if it actually worked, and we can confirm that this is the case as after initially powering it on, the fan did operate at around 700RPM for roughly 3 seconds. After that though, it switched itself off and failed to deem it necessary to kick it back into action again. This wasn’t even a quirk with the ‘Zero RPM Hybrid’ functionality as we tried switching it both on and off and still nothing happened.

Now admittedly, our testing methodology is never perfectly ideal in these situations as it is conducted with the PSU opened up. Specifically, so we can actually access the fan and perform a rotational speed test on it. As such, rather than a sealed unit, from a passive standpoint, it’s getting far more ‘free air’ than it usually would. Putting this to one side, however, we can only presume that this power supply has been designed so well, and perhaps most notable with the inclusion of many different heat sink banks, that you have to push this power supply exceptionally hard before it deems it necessary to soil your ears with any kind of noise from the fan. – It’s certainly impressive, but frankly, for the sake of this review, I do kind of wish it did run briefly if just to give you some idea as to what you could expect in the seemingly rare occasion it did deem it necessary to have a bit of additional airflow.
