AOC GAMING U27G3X Gaming Monitor Review

Performance

The pixel density of this panel is amazing, cramming 4K into a 27″ display is perhaps a little excessive, but I’ll be damned if the image quality isn’t pin sharp.

It’s easy enough to put two windows side by side, and the scaling doesn’t need to be adjusted, as it’s nice and clear. The pixel density is good enough to do three windows side by side, but the screen size becomes the limitation then.

The glare is a bit of an issue, and direct light sources such as that sunny day do tend to make the screen a little cloudy. This can easily be countered by turning up the display’s brightness and/or pulling your curtains closed.

What is striking, however, is the colour reproduction, with some of the highest colour specifications of any consumer monitor, it looks stunning and while that doesn’t convey in a photo, there’s just a very natural look to everything on screen that’s sure to impress you.

Gaming is what it’s all about though, and 4K 160Hz will never fail to look impressive, assuming you have some PC hardware that can keep up with such extreme demands. I’m running an RTX 4090 and even then in the latest games, I’d be dialing back the settings… or just playing a heavily modded Oblivion!

Halo runs great at these high resolution and refresh rate settings, assuming you remember to turn off the ray tracing options, as you’re less likely to need scaling support to hit the big numbers this way. Motion clarity is sublime though, and while the monitor does support MPRT and Overdrive functions, I was more than happy with the stock settings for my gaming needs.

If you take your eSports very seriously, a cheaper 1440p gaming monitor will more than get the job done, but if you’re more a gaming enthusiast who likes the best image quality too, then having the 4K panel and the insanely impressive colour reproduction is proof that it’s nice to have nice things.
