The AOC GH300 RGB Surround Gaming Headset is available now from a few major retailers, and Amazon UK has it in stock for a very reasonable £39.78, albeit that’s currently down from the £43.99 MSRP. At either price, this is an extremely competitive headset. While Corsair, SteelSeries and a few others have headsets at the same price, they don’t offer hi-res support, an on-cable controller, RGB, or 7.1 virtual surround, making the AOC GH300 one of the best investments in this price range.
This is a great little headset, and while the GH300 is not perfect, it’s easy to overlook any minor issues thanks to the wallet-friendly price tag. For starters, I’m not a fan of fixed cable designs, as I like to be able to swap cable lengths, or easily replace them if they get damaged. Although I will commend them for giving it an on-cable controller, that’s a nice feature. Furthermore, I do like that they’ve made the microphone detachable as I don’t use them too often myself.
The design is, well it looks like a bit of a rip-off if I’m honest, but that’s really something I can live with, and actually something we see quite often in the lower-cost part of the market. That being said, while it looks like it’s imitating its rivals, it’s still an attractive configuration. I love the black and red theme too, it’s a very early-2000’s PC gamer look and I like a bit of colour in my peripherals. Not sure why brands are still putting RGB in headsets, but hey, I’m sure plenty will like it, well some, well one person… maybe.
The sound quality is robust enough to put a smile on my face and throwing movies, music, and gaming at it, it has a pleasing sound. Plenty of detail, and a punchy low-end that just sounds “good” and while the clarity isn’t up to scratch with other Hi-Res headsets, most 24-bit 96kHz headsets cost a lot more money!
All the big name brands have a competitive headset at around £40, but few, if any, deliver the level of features on offer from AOC and the GH300. Sure, you may find some imported Chinese products on Amazon with a lot of features for low money, but from a big name, a well-known and trusted brand like AOC? I don’t think so. For a PC gamer, if you have £40, the GH300 is the headset to buy right now.
