The AOC Q24G2A is pretty new to these markets, but it already appears to be selling out or sold out at the usual major retailers. The only place I could find with stock was Box.co.uk and at £219.99 at the time of writing, I suspect it’ll be flying off the shelves there too. The only real competition I can think of is the (rather fantastic) Cooler Master GM27-CQS which has a VA panel but otherwise costs about the same. I mean, you can pay £209.99 for a 24″ IPS 60Hz monitor… so this is a great deal.
AOC is one of the biggest names and the best in the business when it comes to all kinds of monitors. From humble office displays to professional editing monitors, and a huge amount of gaming hardware in between, so I’m really not surprised to see them bring another great quality display to market.
There are a few minor things with the monitor, but there’s nothing that would put me off of a purchase. The little joystick UI controls are better, but AOC has used those little push buttons on the bottom of the bezel, they’re a pain, but they get the job done. There’s no portrait mode, which I think is best used on small monitors like this. Furthermore, there’s one DisplayPort and one HDMI and the HDMI is limited to 144Hz. As I said, hardly enough to put you off, but if you need more than two display inputs, you may want a more high-end model.
The overall build quality is good though, and despite the smaller size and price, it uses the same aesthetic, colours and stand design are the larger models in the range. Plus, the stand clips in tool-free, and a single thumbscrew holds the legs on, so you can put it together without the use of tools, which is great for a quick setup.
Overall though, it’s a gaming monitor, and when it came down to it, its resolution and refresh rate really delivered a great gaming experience. I thought dropping from my usual 32″ panel to a 24″ would be a real pain, but honestly, once I was in my game, it just didn’t matter… and I just moved the screen a little closer.
