AOC unveils 29 inch IPS UWHD 2560 x 1080 Display

We’ve been seeing display manufacturers struggling to take the PC market forward from 1920 by 1080 displays over the past few years. Making the transition from 1920 by 1080 to 2560 by 1440, or 1920 by 1200 to 2560 by 1600, has been something very few companies have engaged with because the high prices mean demand from customers has been low. Consumers, broadly speaking, would rather grab three 1080p displays and run them together than spend that same amount of money to get a single high-resolution 1600p or 1440p display. So how can display manufacturers innovate within this catch-22 of the display market?

Well AOC’s solution isn’t unheard of, but we think it is the first step in starting the transition to higher resolutions. The AOC myMulti-Play q2963Pm (not the most catchy product name in the world…) is a 29 inch display that features IPS and a resolution of 2560 by 1080. That means an aspect ration of 21:9 compared to 16:9 on 1920 by 1080 and 16:10 on 1920 by 1200 displays. The AOC myMulti-Play monitor allows users to have the functionality of a large 1080p IPS screen but with the extra width to fit in more. Other key specifications of this new monitor from AOC include a 50 million to one Dynamic Contrast Ratio and one thousand to one typical contrast ratio, viewing angles are 178 degrees both vertical and horizontal, the response time is 5ms and the brightness is 250 nits.

AOC provide an “MHL for Android users” feature which allows Android gadgets to be hooked up to the display via MHL and output in super high resolutions. This MHL port allows for charging as well as data transfer. AOC equips a HDCP compatible HDMI port, a DVI-D port, a D-Sub port and two Display Ports for an extensive range of connectivity. AOC are quoting power consumption figures of 26W active and 0.5W stand-by, the monitor is Energy Star 5.0 certified.

One of the key “unique” features versus other monitors is the ability to divide the screen up into multiple screens using AOC’s “Screen +” software, these practical panes can be accessible through shortcuts. All of this is available at a price of £429 with a three year warranty.
