How Much Does it Cost?

Overview

The Apacer AS723 2TB Hyperspeed Portable SSD is obviously a great quality drive. While there are faster, smaller, or larger capacity drives out there, it’s about finding a balance about what actually meets your requirements for storage, and of course, your budget. This drive will be available in 512GB, 1TB and 2TB variants, and a 4TB variant is in development now too, which we expect before the end of the year.

2000 MB/s read and write is pretty fast for portable storage, especially given the tiny form factor. Recording high resolution and high frame rate footage direct to the drive clearly isn’t going to be an issue, and thus far, it hasn’t thrown up any issues at all in our production testing.

The speed is good, but the size of the drive is quite surprising. It may only be tiny, and at 35-5 grams it’s incredibly light. However, it’s also very strong, having passed a 1.2m military-grade drop test, or as Apacer themselves say “the AS723 have passed MIL-STD-810G 516.6 Procedure IV (Transit Drop Test), meaning no data is corrupted when it is dropped from a height of 1.22 meters. With a special anti vibration structure, it can reduce vibrations while minimizing the impacts caused by accidental movements.”

It’s also pressure resistant up to 1500KG, so dropping it, sitting on it, or accidentally parking a small city car on top of it shouldn’t be too much trouble. Sure, you may scuff and scratch it up a fair bit, but your data should be protected, and that’s what really matters.

The aluminium alloy case does look great, and makes the drive both light and strong, but it also acts as a passive heatsink, which as we saw in our testing never even hit 50c, which is impressive after multiple brutal benchmarking runs to put it through its paces. If it can stay cool under those tests, it’ll be absolutely fine for normal day to day usage.

Should I Buy One?

Portable storage doesn’t get much better than this, for the speed and capacity, it’s exceptional small, lightweight and very durable, making it an ideal choice for those who need it for travel, for on-location production of content, or to just easily pass it around the office to move backed up files, large assets and other projects.
