Apple has responded petulantly to the idea that Xiaomi, the best-selling smartphone retailer in China, could be the world’s biggest phone manufacturer within ten years.
Xiaomi’s CEO and founder, Lei Jun, boasted about his company’s quick ascent, asserting, “I believe that no one thought the Xiaomi from three years ago, which just made its first phone, would later rank as the third largest player,” calling Xiaomi a “small miracle”. Bruce Sewell, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Legal and Government Affairs, belittled Lei’s posturing, saying, “It is easy to say, it is more difficult to do.” He added that there are “many good competitive phones in China.”
Xiaomi’s Android smartphones are competing with both Apple and Samsung for market domination, offering similar functionality but at a much lower price than its two competitors.
