One of the major bombs Apple dropped earlier this year was with the iPhone 7. After decades of standardization, Apple decided to remove the 3.5 mm audio jack from their new iPhone. In order to listen to any audio with headphones would require the use of a wireless headset/earbud or using the provided adapter. At the same event, Apple announced their new Airpods wireless earbuds. Set for a late October launch, it appears that launch date is being delayed indefinitely.
According to a statement released by Apple, the company “needs a little more time before AirPods are ready for our customers.” The statement goes on to note that “The early response to AirPods has been incredible” and “We don’t believe in shipping a product before it’s ready.” Unfortunately, there is no set time frame given yet for when the Airpods would eventually be ready but hopes it would be soon. Since the statement release, the website has changed from a “late October” to “Coming Soon”.
Given the complexities of the Airpods, it’s not surprising there might be some delays though I didn’t think Apple would be one of those companies that would suffer a delay. Several possible issues are that they fall out easily, the batteries aren’t up to specification or some other usage problem. There also more mundane reasons like supply chain delays or snafus but we may never find out why.
