Apple Developing Redesigned Magic Mouse to Address Charging Flaw

Apple is well-known for its product innovation, though not all designs are without flaws. The Magic Mouse, a sleek and stylish device with touch controls, wireless functionality, and color options to match Macs and iPads, has become infamous for one significant shortcoming: the charging port. Placed on the bottom of the mouse, it forces users to leave the device upside down while recharging. After 15 years, Apple may finally be addressing this design flaw.

A Redesigned Magic Mouse in the Works

According to Mark Gurman’s report in Bloomberg’s Power On newsletter (thanks TheVerge), Apple is working on a redesigned successor to the Magic Mouse. The company has been prototyping new designs with the goal of creating a mouse that “better fits the modern era.” Though the details remain scarce, Gurman notes that the new version will address the charging port’s location and other long-standing complaints from users. While a release is still over a year away, likely between 12 to 18 months, Apple is taking the time to perfect the design.

Potential Solutions and Design Inspirations

The new design is expected to eliminate the awkward charging port placement, possibly by adopting ideas already seen in PC mice, such as magnetic charging bases. This would allow users to simply place the mouse on a charging pad when not in use, ensuring it’s always ready to go. Some speculate that Apple might incorporate a MagSafe-style wireless charging system, which could offer the convenience of charging without the need for a cable, much like the iPhone. However, these ideas are still in the conceptual phase, and Apple’s design team has yet to settle on the final version.

With the new Magic Mouse likely launching in the next 15 to 18 months, users will have to continue charging their mouse in the traditional manner for some time yet.
