Apple first announced the iMac Pro back in June, but it is now available for purchase. As the name suggests, the iMac Pro is a powerful system since it is for professionals. It even comes complete with a 27-inch Retina 5K display, as well as a Space Grey magic Keyboard and Mouse 2 out of the box. It uses an all-in-one design, integrating the system into the monitor itself. Although this monitor/system still remains slim looking. The active cooling system uses a pair of turbine turbo fans, keeping airflow flowing around inside the enclosure. The machine measures 65cm wide by 51.6cm tall, with a depth of 20.3 cm. It is also fairly lightweight at only 9.7kg.
With a starting price of £4,899.00, it is not for the faint of heart or light of wallet. That is just the base price. The fully-loaded without software extras runs for about £12,507.00. A copy of Final Cut Pro X costs £299.99 on top of that, and a copy of Logic Pro X costs £199.99 extra.
The standard £4,899 configuration uses a 3.2GHz 8-core Intel Xeon W processor which can turbo boost up to 4.2 GHz. It comes with 32GB of 2666MHz DDR4 ECC memory and a 1TB SSD. In terms of graphics card, Apple has an exclusive partnership with AMD on the iMac Pro. So the standard option offers the Radeon Pro Vega 56 with 8GB of HBM2 memory.
The top-end configuration uses a 2.3GHz 18-core Intel Xeon W processor capable of Turbo Boostup to 4.3GHz. The maximum memory configuration offered is 128GB of 2666MHz DDR4 ECC Adding either of those to the standard option costs £2,160.00 each to the base price. Users can also opt for either a 2TB(+£720.00) or 4TB SSD (+£2,520.00). The switch to the Radeon Vega 64 with 16GB of HBM2 adds £540.00 to the price tag. Additional hardware options include Magic Mouse 2 + Magic Trackpad (£149), and a matching Space Grey VESA mount adapter kit for £79.00.
The 27-inch display supports a maximum resolution of 5120 x 2880, with Wide colour P3 support and 500 nits of brightness. Additional display support is available via Thunderbolt 3 USB-C interface. There are actually four USB 3.0 ports, and four Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports in the rear. There is also a 3.5mm headphone jack as well as an SDXC card slot and 10Gb Ethernet port.
