An Arizona teen’s tweet has gone viral after it showed copious amounts of smoke coming out of an iPhone 7 Plus in a 21-second video. 18-year old Briana Olivas says that her iPhone 7 Plus was purchased in January and recently took it back to the same Sprint store she purchased it from because of an issue with it failing to turn on. According to Olivas, her phone was working normally until the following morning:
“I was asleep with my phone charging next to my head, my boyfriend grabbed the phone and put it on the dresser. He went to the restroom … and from the corner of his eye he saw my phone steaming and [heard] a squealing noise. By the time he got over to the phone it had already caught fire, he quickly grabbed the phone and threw it in the restroom … as soon as he threw [it] in the restroom, it blew up and more smoke started coming out of the phone.”
Apple acted quickly and replaced her phone and have launched an investigation, running tests to figure out exactly why this occured. When Olivas brought the smoking and partially melted phone to the Apple Store, the Genius employee has said that they have never seen anything like this before. Olivas claims that she only used official Apple chargers so the possibility of the issue brought on by faulty knock-off chargers are ruled out.
