Apple looking for a change in the iPhone dock connector

The Cupertino company is thinking about making some changes to its connector, this does however have both its pros and cons.

The main pro faced is space saving inside the Apple device, which could allow for larger battery or some more powerful hardware. On the other hand, it does look like a change in connector could create a rather undesired effect for the company.

Apple did agree to a plan by the European Union for all the phone manufacturers to adopt the micro-USB connector as a standard for battery charging, thus making battery chargers universal on their own and avoiding the need for a specific charger. This would also have a largely beneficial environmental effect, given the fact that each year, countless useless chargers are thrown out.

Economically, it’s very unlikely Apple will take the opportunity to make the switch as it is making a lot of money from it’s proprietary connectors still so they won’t give up on such source of income that easily.

The other issue, more practical this time, is the fact that with new models featuring a new connector, the new products won’t be compatible with the older devices. You could solve such an issue with an adapter, but this could cause confusion, disgruntlement and the need to buy additional hardware for the consumer.

However, such a change could also allow Apple to make a new leap forward and become a market leader in terms of universal connector standard for smartphones (with the micro-USB solution).
