According to a Bloomberg report, Apple is preparing their next-generation AirPods headphones for a 2019 release. The compact audio solutions are a surprisingly successful product for Apple, despite the early criticisms of going fully wireless and cost. Apple’s accessory line itself earned over $5B in 2017. This is a big jump from the $1B it earned in 2006. In fact, their wearables revenue grew by 70% within just a year. So it only makes sense that they would focus on expanding that line.
The update is expected to include a superior wireless chip, and better Siri integration. Apple is also aiming for a more durable product option with better water-resistance.
Current AirPod models require users to tap before enabling voice commands. However, the upcoming re-design is going to introduce a “hands-free” mode, calling upon the AI assistant just by saying “Hey, Siri”.
The update will include a separate water-resistant version as well. There have been users who are asking for more ruggedized options which can withstand some beating. However, they often tend to be bulkier in design than typical Apple products. This tough version should survive splashes and rain use. Those hoping for a fully submerge-able option would unfortunately have to look elsewhere.
