Apple has reportedly slashed the production of its high-end Vision Pro headset in response to lower-than-expected demand. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo highlighted that Apple has reduced its shipment forecast significantly, cutting down the expected sales from an initial estimate of 700,000 to 800,000 units to just 400,000 to 450,000 units for 2024.
The decision to reduce production precedes the headset’s international release, indicating a strategic shift based on early market feedback. Priced at $3,500, the Vision Pro has not met sales expectations, prompting Apple to reconsider its roadmap for future mixed-reality devices. The lack of enthusiasm for the premium-priced headset may delay the launch of a more affordable mixed-reality model beyond 2025.
Despite being well-received for its technical capabilities, the Vision Pro has struggled to maintain consumer interest beyond the initial purchase period. This trend could influence the broader industry, particularly affecting the production of specialized VR and AR components like Micro OLED displays, which may not achieve the anticipated adoption rates.
As a market leader, Apple’s adjustments to its product strategies often set trends that affect the entire tech industry. The performance of the Vision Pro could send ripples across the sector, impacting not only Apple but also component manufacturers and competitors in the VR and AR markets.
This development underscores the challenges tech companies face when pricing cutting-edge technology and predicting consumer demand in dynamic market conditions.
