Apple were kind enough to announce the next version of their OS today, Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion is set to gel the OS X operating system with the very popular iOS. It will bring across many of the iOS-based apps such as Messages, Notes, Reminders, and the Game Center over to the Mac.
The iOS lovin’ doesn’t stop there, as they’ll also be dragging over the Notification Center, Share Sheets, Twitter integration, and AirPlay Mirroring. Mountain Lion will be big on cloud-based services, where it’ll feature iCloud for easier setup and integration with your apps.
Gatekeeper is being introduced to keep your system safe from malicious software, where it gives you control over what sources you can download apps from. Gatekeeper can be set to either install applications from anywhere, or you can completely lock it down and only accept application installs from the Mac App Store. This is a great feature for new end users to the Mac, or cautious users who want a more closed-off type of Mac.
Game Center lets you personalize your Mac gaming experience, by allowing you to game against, or with, your friends no matter what Apple system they’re on, be it Mac, iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. This is a great feature for those out there who are Apple-only, or have lots of Apple-branded products throughout the home.
The Developer Preview of Apple’s Mountain Lion is available now.
