Year after year it seems that Apple is working hard to abolish almost every port we take for granted. SD cards, USB ports, HDMI ports, even the audio jack. These are industry standard ports used by billions of devices around the world, some of which have been a global standard for decades. In their efforts to remove the ports, Apple still seem aware that their users actually need the things they’re taking away, and to combat that, the company now produced a whopping 17 different dongles to give you some of the missing connectivity back!
“We recognize that many users, especially pros, rely on legacy connectors to get work done today and they face a transition,” said Apple in a recent statement. “We want to help them move to the latest technology and peripherals, as well as accelerate the growth of this new ecosystem.” they added.
How is Apple going to help? They’re reducing the prices of their dongles til the end of the year. For example, the USB to USB-C adapter will be $9 not $19. A small return given the huge price increases on some Apple devices in recent months.
The whole thing is a mess right now, and professional users who need to connect their devices together on a regular basis are having to deal with a mess of cables each time, something that really doesn’t fit the old “it just works” philosophy. Perhaps Apple are right, and once people transition to more wireless add-ons and future models, it’ll all just work, but right now, it doesn’t.
