Are Nvidia Working on an Ouya Like Console?

NVIDIA-Brand-Shot-2014-9

Just what are Nvidia working on right now? We’ve long suspected that the Shield 2 is on the way, with various rumours and fillings pointing us towards a slightly upgraded model that features a higher resolution display and the Tegra K1 processors. Then we’ve also seen them filing a Shield Tablet, but now a report from the BBC suggests they’re also working on a console based unit to compete with offerings from Sony and Microsoft such as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One for a space under your TV.

The unit would be Android based and likely run off the new Tegra K1 processor, which isn’t powerful enough to directly compete with the current generation of consoles, but it’s hardly lacking in power either. The new console unit would however maintain the streaming capabilities set down by the current Nvidia Shield, offloading the graphics rendering to your desktop PC, streaming the output to your big screen TV or other display devices.

With Shield, the rumoured tablet and now the console based unit, it certainly sounds like Nvidia are trying to cover all their bases by creating a gaming ecosystem, suitable for different consumer needs, but all still relatively capable of the same tasks; running flag-ship Android based gaming experiences and streaming PC games.

  1. Personally I couldn’t care less what they unveil next unless it’s a Maxwell based high-ish end graphics card, then I’ll sit up and take notice.
