ARM processors are at the core of nearly every smartphone and tablet on the market and let’s face it the performance of the mid-range to high-end smartphones is already a lot higher than what most of us actually need. The same could be said for most processors but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement in both performance and power efficiency. ARM are seeking to improve their processors with the launch of a new version – the Cortex A17 series. The Cortex A17 series is going to boost the performance of mid range devices, bringing them even closer to higher end products. The Cortex A17 series will be coming to mid range smartphones, tablets and even smart TVs very soon.
ARM’s Cortex A17 processor uses a 28nm manufacturing process and supports a big.LITTLE configuration. ARM are promising up to a hefty 60% performance boost in performance compared to the Cortex A9. The Cortex A17 processor series will be paired up with GPUs like the Mali T720 GPU which offers OpenGL ES 3.0 support, the Mali-V500 and the Mali-DP500. The Cortex A17 series is scalable up to four cores with four additional Cortex A7 processors in the big.LITTLE configuration.
