ASMedia are a firm ever growing in their reputation thanks to their large involvement in producing SATA III 6Gb/s and USB 3.0 5Gb/s controllers. Now with Thunderbolt arriving on the PC platform ASMedia is generating production for Thunderbolt 10Gb/s controllers in order to stay at the forefront of connectivity. The company’s president Lin Che-Wei stated that ASMedia would move towards producing Thunderbolt compatible products. Although we are not sure what these products will actually be since Intel still owns the sole rights to the Thunderbolt controllers so other companies may only use Intel provided Thunderbolt chipsets and controllers.
However, irrespective of what happens with the Thunderbolt market ASMedia is a rapidly growing firm. It expects to shift a whopping 40 million USB 3.0 controllers in 2012 while the firm will remain focussed on the handset market. ASMedia is now taking orders from Western Digital, Seagate and Toshiba for USB 3.0 bridge controllers which should provide further lucrative business for them. ASMedia are a subsidiary of ASUStek computers (or ASUS).
