Although the Assassin’s Creed series always had lovely locales to run around in, many critics point out the shallowness of the actual combat system. This was something that developers took to heart and made sure to work on during the extended development time of the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Origins. In their most recent Developer Q+A, game director Ashraf Ismail breaks down the game film so that players can appreciate ahead of time all the effort they have put in.
What is shown in the video is indeed very promising, especially with a new hitbox-based combat system. This gives fight scenes a more organic feeling in comparison to the pre-scripted animation. Less “rail based” systems in AAA games is always good news. This change also opens up the ability to do combos and add various weapon effects. The addition of poison and fire to alter the weapon stats also give the system, much more depth. It even has a very RPG-esque feel to it unlike previous Assassin’s Creed titles.
Even the enemies get upgrades. For one, they are a lot smarter and take advantage of attacking in groups. This means players have to be a certified bad-ass in order to walk out of a spontaneous group skirmish alive. Players would have to learn to take advantage of defensive moves such as blocking and parrying if they wish to survive.
