Since the start of the year, one of the most confusing points surrounding upcoming graphics card releases has undoubtedly been how much memory they would come with. Fortunately, in regards to the 6700 XT, earlier this month AMD finally confirmed that it would feature a 12GB configuration.
Given that they did not reveal anything regarding the standard 6700, this GPU is clearly still subject to more than a little VRAM speculation. We did think we had an answer to this last February when at least two independent EEC registrations were made for 6GB models. – Following a report via Videocardz, however, that theory may (once again) have been thrown out of the window as ASUS has just registered a new 6700 ‘Phoenix’ graphics card with it reportedly containing 12GB.
In the listing, which you can check out below, we clearly see a reference made to an ASUS Phoenix GPU utilizing 12GB of memory. Something that clearly contradicts all prior EEC registrations made so far by other AIB partners such as PowerColor and ASRock made 6GB entries. Therefore, this does lead us to either one of two conclusions, either one of them is wrong, or both of them are right!
As we always go regarding this, we should note that EEC product registrations never mean that a release is set in stone. They’re placeholder and, although indicative, are never guarantees that the listed item will ever get as far as a production line. Let alone a retail shelf. At this point, though, our best guess is that the 6700 is likely going to be released in two different memory variants. A less expensive 6GB version catered more towards the entry-level consumers, with a more potent 12GB version pushing the 1440p gaming narrative.
At this point though, we’re still left guessing until AMD officially rubber stamps the standard 6700. And at this point, nobody seems to know exactly when we can expect that!
