Price
The ASUS Echelon Forrest isn’t currently showing at retailers, but I have been informed that it should be priced around £60 here in the UK. This is about average for a headset of this specification and performance.
Overview
I’m not exactly blown away by this headset, but it does still offer a few benefits that make it a worthwhile investment for your those who play a lot games. Audio quality is crystal clear overall and very well suited to competitive gaming, the bright sound benefits team chat and gives a natural sound to voices, while foot steps in FPS games stand out rather well and it’s not too tiring to listen to over long gaming sessions. If you don’t play competitive or team-based multiplayer games, then you may find the sound a little lacking in the wow department, and the same applies to movies and music, these are not headphones for getting the best cinematic experience, they’re for gaming and that’s about it.
The multi-format support is a big win in terms of value for money and being able to use them on the PlayStation 4, as well as a multitude of mobile devices is a great way of getting more value for your money. I used the headset to make a few phone calls and listen to some music, and I am happy with the results. The closed design of the ear cups is great for blocking out a bit of unwanted background noise, which is handy if you plan on wearing them on a bus/train for your commute to work.
The plastics do feel a little light on this headset, but the headset feels pretty sturdy and durable overall. The retractable microphone is a welcome bonus as it means you don’t have to detach it when done and the flexible boom means it’s unlikely to break any time soon. The cables included all have a thick braiding on them too, which means they should last a long time, while suffering minimal wear and tear.
Pros
- Durable build quality
- Clear audio
- Braided cables and extra cables included
- Multi-format support
- Retractable microphone
- Cool woodland camo design
Cons
- Not ideal for movies or music
- Treble levels are a little high
“The Asus Echelon Forest offers similar performance and a feature set that matches rival headsets of a similar price, what it really boils down to is which one you like the look and feel of. The headset is very comfortable to wear, it’s great for competitive gaming and it looks pretty cool thanks to the camouflage colour scheme; if that’s what you want from a headset, then you’re going to be very happy with the Echelon.”
Thank you Asus for providing us with this sample.
